Orfordness – Inside Lab 1

The decaying concrete structures occupying the ex Atomic Weapons Research Establishment on Orfordness on the Suffolk coast are the catalyst for much of my recent and current work. Looking towards the end of Lab 1 where the test pit meets the far wall is an opening through which the bombs would have been delivered for testing, the shape of which forms the basis of this work.

Using unstretched canvas cut to shape, this painting is effectively a hanging but takes on a solid, almost sculptural form in its own right. For hanging, my preference is to attach black tarpaulin clips, equally spaced along the top edge and hung off right-angle hooks screwed into the wall. These will be included but buyers are at liberty to devise their own hanging system.
