Golden Feathers: Assisi

Inspired by Psalm 36:7
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
St Francis of Assisi delivered a Sermon to the Birds in 1220.
The paintings in Assisi by Giotto of this event are truly beautiful and represent St Francis’ canticle to creation.
The paintings have strong compositions and are a palette full of rich turquoises, blues and salmon pinks.
Embroidery has a rich history as do the paintings of Giotto, these textiles are embroidered on painted tissue paper and gilded. They are very fragile until they have received a coat of shellac varnish before the gold leaf is applied.
