About Nana Afua Pierre
I was 17 when I actively represented my faith through my art. I felt it was a way of expressing my faith and sharing my beliefs with others in an intimate and unobtrusive way. Many of those close to me are Christians from different denominations, Muslims, agnostics and atheists. Being able to paint calms me down, then the paintings becomes a vehicle for me to speak honestly about my core beliefs. It also takes away the judgement, anxiety, fear and indignation that can manifest when people from different belief systems come together.
Gifted by God is another vehicle for me to reconnect with God, myself and others too. That connection in its authentic form can be difficult for me to achieve without my art. It’s like a lifeline.
